Our Q&A with Dawn

When did you discover your passion for art?

“I have been into art since I was a small child, around five or six years old. I would spend every six-weeks holiday drawing and painting cartoons at the dining room table, things such as Snow White and Jungle Book.

It was about 14 years ago when I thought this is my passion, and this is what I really want to do. I’ve always been creative, throughout my entire life, but when I got to 44 and my children were teenagers, I thought I’m just going to go for it and that’s whathappened!”

How would you describe your artistic style to someone who has never seen your work?

“I would describe my style as completely impulsive, intuitive, and super colourful.  I would say I am very vibrant as a person, and I think that my work mirrors what my personality is like. I hope that when people view my work, they go away feeling happy and full of joy!”

What made you want to exhibit your work at Gusto House?

“I was at Newark Flower and Garden Show at Newark Showground in April, and I met Annick, the Receptionist. She approached me and told me that she had this wonderful space at Gusto House and asked me if I’d like to exhibit my work there. I thought, wow, this is such a great opportunity!

I came to view the venue, and I just thought it was perfect, the space is so airy and light. It’s just perfect to show off all the colours in my work.”

What does your typical day in the art studio look like?

“My typical day in the art studio starts off with a cup of tea or a cup of coffee, sat with my dog, thinking about what I am going to do. I normally have a plan, as I have an intention book that I jot things down in. So, I’ll have a read through that and then I will put my music on, which is normally Absolute 80s, and I will just crack on and paint!”

What do you hope visitors feel or take away when they view your work?

“I really hope that my work lifts people’s spirits and makes them feel joy. Colours for me, are so inspirational, they can really benefit you, your wellbeing, and how you feel.

I get it a lot when people say ‘Oh, your work makes me feel so happy and alive!’ and that for me is so beautiful, because that’s how they make me feel too.”

4 painted pictures hanging on a white wall, all pictures contain really bright and vibrant colours. Two paintings are of a horse and the other two are of flowers.
